Duration: 20 min.

Dedication:
to
Paul Carlson
Premiere: William Woods College,
Fulton, Missouri 1991.
Violinist Paul Carlson commissioned this sonata
after performing J.J. Swift's orchestral suite Heart in the Forest
with the Southeast Kansas Symphony, where he served as Concertmaster. Dr.
Carlson, along with pianist Robert Ensor, premiered the piece in 1991 at William
Woods College in Fulton Missouri. It was a success. The duo later performed the
sonata in Pittsburg, Kansas where the audience likewise received the new music
warmly and with enthusiasm.
This little-known work has also been performed in
Minnesota, where it's audiences equally welcomed it with open arms.
For the most part, the piece is tonal and
melodic, and "audience friendly". It incorporates a healthy dose of dissonance
in the second movement. As the first two movements are heavy in thought and very
emotional, the third is a joyful, (and sometimes raucous) romp with a
rip-roaring uplifting end.
